Musuem of Skye Life

Flora McDonalds grave, she is famous all over Scotland for
helping Bonnie Prince Charles escape after the Battle at Culloden.
However her life was so much more interesting than that with
having a large family, immigrating to America, returning to Skye
on a ship that was attacked by pirates and living to the ripe old age of 68.
Righto, deep breaths lets prepare ourselves for crazy roads. Ready, set, go. We are off on the Totternish Loop, a hilly 50-mile circuit around the most iconic landmarks in Skye. The web is full of nightmare stories about parking and the roads, lets see what reality brings.

Err, pullover we are not yet 2 mins into the journey and we need to stop, Highland Coo’s and ponies in a field. Snap. Moving on, this road seems ok so far, lots of tourists are out on another glorious sunny day. I still don’t need the rain jacket. Is it tempting fate saying that?

The first landmark looms into sight, pull over. Thats big, it is called the Old Man of Storr and at its hight point 719m tall. Its only 9am in the morning and the main carpark is packed, but we get a spot up the road between a motorhome and BMW i8 roadster. Its already 26 degrees and now the fun part begins walking up the track, photos are keeping us occupied as we ascend. Now on the downhill the views are wonderful as the lush green landscape falls into the glittering blue sea. I know that sounds a bit poetic for me but it is impressive.

Flickers on, back onto the road being wary of fast moving locals and we are away again. Stop, lots of cars, hmm, no parking, righto lets just straddle those potholes and go into the next field. I think I am liking the bigger car today. So many more options than the little cars stuck with nowhere to go. Magic views up and down the coast.

Onto Kilt Rock and Melt Falls, yes it looks like a kilt. A detour down to Staffin Beach, really getting the hang of these one lane roads with passing lanes now. Watch out tourists Big Bertha is coming through.

Now onto the big one Quirang, right road, wrong road, turn around in someones driveway, let the fast motorbikes go and now its time to head up. Wow, the heather on the side of the road is amazing, it must all be coming out early with the hot weather. Its one lane to the top and nervous tourists and go fast locals make for a challenging mix. We manage to get to the top intact mainly by pulling over for locals and then sticking on their tail to keep flowing.

Parking is nuts, but at the very end there are 5 spots left, glad we did not get here any later. So with every other international tourist, we walk out towards the Pinnacles. The track is pretty easy except for the gully where we have to channel our inner mountain goat and Jane does it with style. At the end, we have a celebratory banana and then return to the car.

The road down is going to be fun, so time to break out the go pro and attach to the side of the car. Lets be daring and put on the driver's side its a great way to capture the looks of horror on other drivers as they try to pass Big Bertha. Tired but happy we survived the day, the summary is the landscape is too big to photograph well and the roads are doable but definitely not for the faint hearted.
